Sigung Michael L. Whittle has been teaching Kajukenbo at Chandler Gilbert Community College since March 1994. He served as Chief Instructor at Bergstrom Air Force Base in Austin, Texas, and Southwest Texas State University in San Marcos, Texas, and he opened the Kajukenbo Self-Defense Institute in Gilbert, Arizona. He was Regional Director of the American Kenpo Association headed by Sifu Donald K. Nahoolewa. Sigung Whittle was born April 23, 1952 in Austin, Texas. He began studying Kajukenbo Karate at Bergstrom Air Force Base when he was 17 years old. He was awarded his first black belt on March 17, 1974 by Instructor Daniel Baker. He received permission to study Kajukenbo from Sifu Nahoolewa and was awarded his second degree black belt and Instructors Certificate in October 1975; he received his third degree black belt and the title 'Sifu' in January 1979. After Sifu Nahoolewa's retirement in 1983, he was awarded his fourth degree black belt by Sifu Baker in January 1985 and his fifth degree black belt on June 17, 1990. He was promoted to 'Sigung' and received his sixth degree black belt on May 26, 1996. He received his seventh degree black belt on May 17, 1999 from Sijo Adriano Emperado. On April 20, 2002, Sigung Whittle received his eighth degree black belt from Sifu Nahoolewa at the Kajukenbo reorganizational meeting establishing the AKA. Sigung Whittle has also studied Shaolin Kung Fu, Hung Gar Gung Fu, Danzan Ryu Jujistsu, and Hawaiian Lua. He is currently a student of Olohe Solomon Kaihewalu studying Hawaiian Lua. |
